Does Money Buy Style? The Suits of Hollywood's Top Paid Actors

Posted: Nov 15 2016

Following up on this article we read on Forbes, ranking the highest paid actors in Hollywood, we decided to investigate if these gentlemen ranked the same way when judged on their style. To carry out this task, and to give each men equal chances, we judged them on the first three pictures of red carpet attires we could find, and decided a verdict.

1. Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey Jr is the best paid actor in Hollywood, and he should probably fire his stylist. The man inside the Iron Man costume is undoubtedly one of the best, most eclectic actors in circulation, but his sense of style ranks from poor to frightening.  Most of his ensembles display very little understanding of tailored clothing. His pants are often too long and when he goes out of his way to play with contrasts, the results are disastrous. Both shoes and ties look cheap, and the open collar shirts indicate that they don't fit his neck properly.

We tried to give Robert Downey Jr an extra chance judging him on four instead of three pictures, but the fourth picture did not help. (Props for the purple suit though - that requires swag to pull off!)

2. Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock

Dwayne Johnson dresses brilliantly, which is never easy for a big fella. The Rock seems to understand the importance of a well cut bespoke suit, and he pulls off his ensembles effortlessly. His style choices, from the wider lapels to preferring a three piece suit are all signs of advanced style literacy. We also love the little touches used to spin his outfits, like the beautiful pocket squares, sometimes detailed by polka dots or white contours. In addition, the patterns he selects for the fabrics of his suits are refined, but never too elaborate, merging classic elegance with catch-eye flair. The only detail that could be improved is his selection of ties, a little too shiny for our taste.

The Rock overcomes his size with impeccably tailored suits, and he'd be more than welcome to come pick up one of our Italian handmade ties to cap his beautiful suits.

3. Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper was number three on the highest paid actors list. His suits are well cut, and there is not much out of place, aside from the orange two piece that is halfway between a quirky statement and an eye sore. We are not sure if Cooper can pull off such an extravagant ensemble, but we are more than willing to give him a pass for the efforts shown by the three piece he comfortably wears in the third picture.

Overall, Bradley does well with classic looks, where the ease with which he wears them is the most attractive feature.

4. Leonardo Di Caprio

Leonardo DiCaprio knows how to wear a classic, and when he is in good form he can pull off some great looks, the first two pictures testify to that. The fabrics and cuts of his suits are impeccable, with varied design options and elegant shoes. We also like how he solves the problem of his patchy beard by grooming a clean cut goatee. In the third picture instead it feels as if Leonardo decided to actively destroy everything good he had done in the previous two. This scruffy version looks like a pear shaped suit combined with horrible trainers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is inconsistent and, although everybody can have a bad day, we wonder if this inconsistency could be one of the traits that hadn't allowed him to win an Oscar for so long. We've previously talked about Leo's suits in The Wolf of Wall Street here.

5. Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth might be low on the money list (yet still earning millions!) but he gets an all round thumbs up from us. His taste is faultless and we particularly like the combination he wears in the third picture. His looks are modern and clean, giving him an air of understated sophistication. This is how you'll look, walking out of Tailor On Ten's beautiful Bangkok townhouse (or when your online package arrives).

If Dwayne Johnson didn’t steal the show, Chris Hemsworth would be the king of this list, showing that, while money can buy suits, style is a choice.
