Breaking Bad: The Suits of Gus Fring and Saul Goodman

Posted: Oct 02 2013

We are back with more TV inspired dappery and yes, that is definitely a word… This week we are taking a look at one of the greatest TV series of all time, Breaking Bad. It’s not a show that most people would associate with bespoke tailoring but there are actually some excellent candidates that would embolden any man’s arsenal. If you haven’t watched Breaking Bad yet you really should, it’s a fantastic yet morally ambiguous show with characters that make you hate yourself for liking them and has more shades of grey than we do!

Our main choice for the show is Gus Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Gus is basically the baddest cat in town, the biggest Meth dealer and a Cartel boss. To the outside world he is a very likeable and quiet man, with a very reserved dress sense. As soon as he is ‘working’ however, the suits come out and it’s all business. His wardrobe plays a very big part in his almost bi-polar nature and it is very interesting to observe the difference in character from one scene to the next. The other character we’ve chosen is Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk, a morally bankrupt defence attorney who will quite happily support any crook in town, particularly the hero/villain (depending on your point of view) Walter White.

Breaking Bad Suits Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring and Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman

Suit No. 1 is a dark and ominous ensemble which is typical of the usual ‘uniform’ worn by Gus during his less scrupulous endeavours. Most people would usually pair light with dark to give a more balanced look but Gus opts for a darker visage, understated yet most definitely dangerous. Tailor On Ten has a dark blue Prince of Wales check window pane Vitale Barberis Canonico Super 120 that is an exact match for this suit. Pair it with any dark shirt and tie and you’ll have an outfit that basically screams ‘don’t mess with me.’ The suit is a single breasted two button with a notched lapel and flapped hip pockets. As for the tie, we would go for something that catches your eye like Indigo Trieste tie from our own pure silk collection.

Suit No. 2, our personal favourite of the three, is an outfit worn on Gus’s little jaunt to Mexico for some frivolous murder and mayhem. Most modern sports coats are cut a little higher at the waist but the choice of length is entirely up to you. In any warm climate, such as Mexico, we would recommend high quality cotton or linen because they wick moisture from the skin and provide maximum breathability. To recreate this outfit we would recommend a Boymi beige Italian cotton for the Sports Jacket, brown cotton Chinos and a classic black 120 – 2 ply Thomas Mason cotton shirt. An outfit made of fabric this good would look and feel nothing short of amazing. Once again the jacket is a single breasted two button with a notched lapel and flapped hip pockets. The standout here however, is the addition of burnt horn buttons which we have a rather extensive selection of.

Suit No. 3 made the list for something a little bit different yet equally as cool. Saul is, let’s face it, a bit of a scumbag. He does, however, wear some exceptional suits, usually opting for the stereotypical pinstripe that has become the trademark for his vampiric, bloodsucking brethren that have passed the bar. It should be noted that we love lawyers… really! Saul usually opts for a lot of colour with his shirts and ties and pairs them with a dark fabric for the suit. This particular example is a rather legendary pearl pin charcoal, which we just happen to have in a Vitale Barberis Canonico Super 110. It is a great looking suit and contrasts well with the high colour pallet of the shirt and tie. Similar again to Gus’s suits, it’s a single breasted two button with a notched lapel and flapped hip pockets. To create an impressive tie and pocket square pairing like Saul is sporting with such bravura, you can have a look at our Italian silk selection - plenty of mix-and-match for everyone!

So whether you a preparing to become the world’s biggest drug dealer / Cartel boss or the lawyer that makes a fortune defending him, come by Tailor On Ten (See what you get by shopping with us) and we will ensure you have the appropriate attire.
