Grasshopper Adventures

Grasshopper Adventures offers bike tours all over Asia. They have a very popular outpost in Bangkok, from which you can set out on exciting tours to discover the wonderful charm of Bangkok’s hidden back alleys and historic landmarks.

Most people who visit Bangkok tend to experience the busy, loud, intense place that is central Bangkok. But there is another side, arguably more charming and certainly a better representation of local culture. This is what the bike tours let you explore, the life of normal people, living and working in the old Bangkok, miles (literally) away from Sukhumvit’s hustling hawkers and constant traffic.

Several tours also go beyond Bangkok to explore the rural countryside. Grasshopper additionally offers bigger trips, ranging from days to weeks, exploring Vietnam, Myanmar etc. When Tailor On Ten went, we decided to stick to the Bangkok Night Ride, which starts at 6pm every day and lasts about 3-4 hours. There are two great benefits to the night tour; the temperature drops when the sun sets, and the temple visits occur after dark, with stunning lighting and almost no other visitors.

You set out crossing the Chao Phraya, reaching the area of Bangkok’s first settlements. Visiting a Christian church and Chinese temple, you get a sense of the multitude of cultures that formed Bangkok, a.k.a. Krung Thep – the City of Angels. Of course, the most impressive temples in Thailand are Buddhist and during the tour you see two of the most famous ones, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Even if you’ve visited them before, they get a new glow at night, specially lit up and near desolate, in stark contrast to tourist-horde day visits. You also visit the famous Flower Market, a virtual cascade with flowers every color of the rainbow.

Just like Tailor On Ten, Grasshopper just received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence 2014 – for good reason. Guides are knowledgeable and entertaining, the bikes of high standard and the routes planned with safety in mind (it never feels dangerous). It’s a truly unique experience that takes you away from the stress of Bangkok. With the wind in your face, you’ll see a new side of the city, offering picturesque alleyways, sunset-colored river vistas and gorgeous golden temples.

TOT Recommends:
Bring a fully charged camera! (And go even if you live here – have you ever really explored the other side of the river?)
