The Suits of Hannibal

Posted: Apr 01 2017

This NBC series brings us into the life of the young Hannibal Lecter, the psychiatrist and criminologist that likes to eat people. While Mr Lecter has horrible taste in food, in the series he displays a very sharp sense of style. In this post we decided to single out some of his combinations and break them down for our readers. You can use his looks to get some inspiration, or just pick a few features from his suits for us to replicate in your Tailor On Ten creations.

Suit Hannibal

Let's start with the suit from the series cover image. We really enjoy the fabric of this one, and if we had to guess, we would say it was milled by Dormeuil. The level of detail of the pattern, mixing a Prince of Wales with a shadow check, and the roughness of the fabric obtained without any of the bulkiness of tweed, speaks highly of the artisans behind the design of the fabric. As for the cut, the three-piece suit is a slim fit, but not too slim, with slanted pockets and four buttons on the cuff. The lapels are relatively wide, but work nicely in conjunction with the bold look, and are not overwhelming. The dark colored oxford shirt has rounded cuffs, and is complemented by a big tie knot, popping out beautifully from the cutaway collar. Another detail we particularly like is the pocket square, picking up on the color of the subtle pattern. Pocket squares seem to be everywhere these days, and we could not agree more.

Since our aim is to give you inspiration, we had to pick the moments in which Hannibal tones down his flamboyant looks, as most times he dresses like a psychopath. The second look we decided to dissect is a subtle one. This three-piece suit is somewhat similar to the one in the cover image, but this time the pattern has lavender stripes on deep blue. The checkered jacket is worn over a subtle checkered shirt, and although checks on checks might be considered to be a no go, the match is slowly coming into fashion, provided that the dimensions of the checks are different from one fabric to the next. We love the tie, but we feel that the pocket square is out of place, trying to steal the show, but doing a tremendously poor job at it.

This look represents another good moment for Hannibal’s psyche. The crazies seems to be under control, as he opts for a long overcoat embellished by four horn buttons sitting close to each other. The sartorial cut of this overcoat had us staring in awe, the fit is perfect, and even if Hannibal is wearing three layers underneath it, plus a bulky tie, the coat fits like a glove. The flapped pockets and breast pocket give the coat very elegant detailing, while the rest of the ensemble keeps faithful to Hannibal’s signature look: big knots on ties with confusing patterns and darker shirts with a cutaway collar.

The Suits of Hannibal

We picked the last look because we think it looks great, even if it can prove a little hard to wear. In case you didn’t notice, the fabric used is quite intense. The tie is flamboyant and we love the double breasted waistcoat. The lapels on the jacket are quite wide, with a contrasting button hole, picking up the color of the suit’s pattern. The plain, elegant black shoes top it all off, making this a terrific ensemble. Hannibal’s style is intense, but some of his ideas are brilliant. If you see anything you like come and see us. We will dim down the extravagant details and tailor a more subtle, easy to wear look. If you fancy coming across as a deranged cannibal instead, we will of course do our best to replicate these suits down to the smallest of details...
