Ten by Tailor On Ten: The Oscars 2015
Posted: Feb 25 2015
Ten by Tailor On Ten is a series of Top 10 lists, carefully curated by the TOT tastemakers.
Here at Tailor On Ten, we’re big fans of films - and the accompanying costumes! This week we sat down to watch the 87th Annual Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars, a.k.a. the glitziest, most glamorous, most star-studded night of the year. Many fantastic films were honored and many fantastic tuxedos were worn. This year the stars went back to basics, with simple styling and great fit, much to our pleasure. Below are our top 10 picks (click the images for a closer look).
10. Steve Carell
Steve Carell wins the accessories category by following the black dress code and letting simplicity rule. A perfectly tied bow tie, incredibly straight pocket square, great glasses and a grey-speckled beard is enough to count him as a winner in our books.
9. J.K. Simmons
J.K. Simmons got a well-deserved Oscar and has a well-deserved place on the red carpet. Though we’re hesitant about the lapel waistcoat, J.K. pulls it off, and we especially like the pocket watch and the ballsy hat.
8. Adam Levine
Despite the douchy pose, Adam Levine looks great with his beautiful shawl lapel tux, well-coiffed hair and the butterfly bow tie. The watch looks great too - if there’s one occasion to wear a gold Rolex, it’s the Oscars.
7. John Legend
Except for making great music and great speeches, John Legend knows how to, ahem, accessorize. For some reason we can’t seem to focus on the tuxedo… All we know is John Legend and Chrissy Teigen look absolutely fantastic.
6. David Oyelowo
David Oyelowo gets a spot on this list thanks to the very strong color choice and immaculate cut of the tuxedo. This is a hard look to master, but he does it! We also love the lapel pin.
5. Miles Teller
As a trend, midnight blue tuxedos took a step back from last year. We still love them and this one fits perfectly (though we would’ve gone for one button). The sleeve is pushed up, but let’s face it, if we were wearing a Montblanc watch, we’d want to show it too. Keleigh Sperry looks stunning and the two make a couple so gorgeous they might cause a whiplash (geddit?!).
4. Chris Pine
Chris Pine defines perfection through simplicity with his classic double-breasted tuxedo. The mother-of-pearl shirt studs and the silk bow tie look great. Double-breasted can be difficult to pull off but it fits Chris’s frame very well and the tuxedo is perfectly balanced through the wide peak lapels.
3. Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne took home Best Leading Actor for a great role in a great movie. Incidentally, he also takes home the prize for best blue tux. The mohair fabric catches the light beautifully and is contrasted by black silk lapels. He still has his baby face, but is it just us or has he grown up since last year?
2. Bradley Cooper
Through his many appearances on the red carpet, Bradley Cooper has perfected the tuxedo look. It’s classic, effortless and fits just right.
1. Benedict Cumberbatch
Last year we saw many off-white dinner jackets. This year, Benedict Cumberbatch held the torch alone, but he nailed it. The fit is perfect and the styling simple, with subtle but consistent details of black. He also hits the sweet spot of crisp white shirt vs cream jacket (from Scabal - one of our own favorite fabric suppliers). The Imitation Game was an incredible film and Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife represented it in immaculate style.
The guys all looked amazing, but as tradition goes, the womens’ dresses tend to take center stage. This was a superb year for gorgeous couture gowns, as evidenced by Scarlett Johansson, Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon and Anna Kendrick (who gets an extra honorable mention for wearing a stunning outfit from Thai designer Thakoon).
