The Suits of Stephen Colbert
Posted: Aug 21 2016
Stephen Colbert recently took over The Late Show, and so far we have been amused. While watching the show, our keen eye for suits could not resist analyzing his style. We got the feeling that most of his suits had something quite presidential about them, and in this article we broke down some of his looks to share with you a secret known by politicians and TV hosts alike.
The first look is from Colbert’s debut on The Late Show. We particularly like the cobalt blue suit especially since we felt that it worked well with the maroon tie. The flashing colour of the fabric is an exception to the standard wardrobe chosen by the TV host, and we think it was to celebrate the big step forward in his career, replacing David Letterman. Colbert usually goes for more toned down colors, a decision that helps his personality steal the show.
In this second picture we find a more usual example of what Colbert wears. Even standing next to Obama his style is not dwarfed and we can notice similarities in the two gentlemen attires. Both Colbert and Obama are after wearing a suit that does not overpower their presence. This is a trick that politicians and TV hosts use to focus the attention of their audience on their words and behaviour, rather than distracting their eyes with flamboyant combinations. To achieve this, classic colours are always used, preferably dark navy, since it is easier to wear than black or gray. Another common denominator is white shirts, a great way of commanding attention, since a white shirt is understated, clean and brings the focus on the wearer’s face. The tie patterns and colours also aim for subtle elegance instead of flair.
In the last picture we find Colbert with another politician, and we picked this moment just to have a dig at Trump’s tie. The tie looks as if it is made out of polyester, and it had us asking ourselves how it was possible that Trump, with all his millions of dollars, could not get his hands on anything better.
