The Suits of the Oscars 2014

It’s time to re-launch the Tailor On Ten blog, and what better occasion than the glitziest event of the year, the Academy Awards? The Hollywood elite shows their very best side in haute couture fashion and the entire world is watching. While the women and their gowns get the most attention, the men are focusing on subtle details and perfect fits, in order to stand out while staying within the frames of a black tie dress code.
A tuxedo is one of the most classic and elegant things in a man’s wardrobes and it certainly commands attention. Whether it evokes thoughts of James Bond in Monte Carlo or Frank Sinatra on stage in Las Vegas, it is always enviable situations – and desirable men!
At the Oscars 2014, expertly hosted by Ellen DeGeneres yesterday, there was no lack of dashing gentlemen, shining on the red carpet. Here are some of our favorite looks.
Jared Leto in a cream Saint Laurent tux, a look that several of his colleagues also opted for. Say what you will about the loud bowtie, but the immaculate fit, perfect white/off-white contrast and the dreamy eyes are undeniable. We look forward to seeing Mr. Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars in Bangkok next month.
John Legend in a classic tuxedo with lower-than-usual button stance. While the sleeves look on the long side, the golden lapel pin adds a subtle touch of luxury.
Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis both look extraordinary on the red carpet with possibly the best accessory of all, the baby bump. Mr. Sudeikis’ navy Prada tux looks great, as does the well-groomed beard (which was a recurring trend among his fellow actors), but why are both buttons done up? A white pocket square from our Italian silk collection could add just the right amount of sophistication to complete this look.
The black peak-lapel tuxedo, done perfectly by Tom Ford and worn just right by Bradley Cooper. The simple styling with black shirt studs, flawless bowtie and white-faced dress watch speaks for itself. Look no further if you have been searching for that classic black bowtie.
Amazing couple #2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie look like they truly belong on the red carpet. Mr. Pitt in a shawl collar tuxedo and neatly trimmed haircut for the evening.
Kevin Spacey drew many looks in his exemplary Burberry tux. One step further than midnight blue, this might be too loud for some people, but accented by black lapels and accessories, it looks just right with Mr. Spacey’s sincere smile.
There was a wide range of looks on the red carpet this year, with retro-inspired cream tux jackets making a splash and the ongoing trend of midnight blue holding on strong, while the classic and ever-impeccable black iterations always look great. As usual, the key to master this restrictive dress code is great materials, great fit and a less-is-more approach.
That said, Pharrell Williams has an incredible level of cool, pushing the envelope in his tuxedo worn with shorts…
It is obvious that the choices for evening wear are wider than ever, so to make sure you get what you want, do as the celebrities do and go bespoke. Contact us to make an appointment and up your red carpet game.
