Interview with Ben Cole, co-founder of Tailor On Ten
Posted: Mar 24 2014
What was your favorite day ever at Tailor On Ten?
The day I fully realized what we had spent years building. We look so much to the future that we forget to reflect on what we create. When our first return customer came in a few years ago, it was such a validation of the business. Now, we have regular clients from all around the world. It’s extremely satisfying building long-term relationships with clients.
What is the most out there suit anyone has made?
One client made a bright purple suit. We had to import the fabric specially and it came out looking incredible! It really suited his coloring and confident style.
What’s the next suit you’re making for yourself?
It will be a mid grey Holland & Sherry Prince of Wales check, with a light blue windowpane. It’s an amazing fabric from one of our favorite mills. I’m making a three-piece suit, as I love the versatility of being able to wear it with or without jacket and/or waistcoat, even with jeans for a night out. Three-piece suits are all the rage, as elegant old-school menswear has come into fashion, big time.
Who had the biggest influence on your style?
I never really followed trends and haven’t had any style icons exactly. I’m inspired by movies, but mostly go for a classic style with a touch of fun. As long as you wear high quality, well fitting and comfortable clothes, you’ll always look good and there’s no need to be boxed-in in your style.
What piece of clothing can no man live without?
A good blazer. A perfect navy blue blazer is almost always appropriate and since you can dress it up or down, it’s extremely versatile. This is worth splurging on, as it should fit perfectly and a high-quality one will last for ages. To make sure it looks modern, I would opt for contrasting brown horn buttons, rather than brass or gold.
What do you wear when you want to make a good impression?
The aforementioned navy blazer, dark jeans, classic shirt in pink, purple or blue with a nice pair of brown shoes. And a beard.
How is Bangkok for menswear?
There is everything here, all the big brands, as well as local designers. For tailoring, men of smaller stature can get OK stuff, but bigger guys need a bespoke tailor. It’s a very trendy city. Style in Bangkok is very fashion forward and there’s something for everyone, with prices ranging from very cheap at the local street markets to top-end luxury in the huge malls.
What’s you favorite thing about Bangkok?
The energy. How alive it is. This city never sleeps and there’s always something happening.
What’s in the future for Tailor On Ten?
I'm really excited about the future. We are constantly launching new products and we have a few exciting things in the works! We've just launched our monthly newsletter and clients will be able to keep updated about what we are doing. Of course we are always looking to improve the quality of our products and service but that goes without saying!
