The Suits of the Cannes Festival 2014
Posted: May 26 2014
Another iteration of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival has just come to an end. As usual, we are here to showcase and critique the forgotten side of red carpet dressing: the menswear! And for those who think we are just on-lookers, read to the end and see our own contribution to the red carpet (no, seriously!).
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds look absolutely stunning on the red carpet. We're not quite convinced about Mr. Reynold's white bowtie, but his flawless choice of company excuses anything. If we may suggest, a black bow tie from our Italian silk collection would fit perfectly with this suit.
James McAvoy shows up to the photo call, which is normally a casual affair, in a three-piece suit. TOT approves; you can never go wrong with a suit. Mr. McAvoy makes it a bit less formal through the low cut four-button waistcoat, no tie and casual shoes.
Mr. Djimon Housou wears a decidedly modern midnight blue tux with a slim shawl lapel. The wing collar and pointed bow tie brings it together outstandingly.
Ryan Gosling has a talent for looking great always, in everything. Here on his way to Cannes, he demonstrates how to travel in style in a button-down pullover, navy chinos and perfect Persol shades. Simple and stylish.
This classic ensemble is worn well by Mr. Robert Pattinson and we appreciate the high-shine silk facings, self-tied bowtie and his big smile.
Where to start here?
Honorable mention: Jason Statham – classic tux, almost oversized bowtie and perfectly straight pocket square. You can find our version of the classic white square here.
#epicfail: Stallone – lilac, really? Did you step out of a Bollywood film?
Perfection: Kelsey Grammer – no one will miss this beautiful strong blue tux! The pointed bow tie appears to be making a strong entry on the red carpet this year. We like it.
All said and done though, as much as we like men in tuxedos, Blake Lively simply won Cannes this year… Well, maybe not her films, but style-wise she has no competition! Hats off!
“So what should I wear for my next black tie event?”, we hear you ask. May we suggest this beautiful number, a midnight blue mohair from Giovanni Tonella with Italian silk peaked lapels? (This would probably have been Leonardo DiCaprio's choice...)
Or take inspiration from these gentlemen, Andrei and Viroon.
One of our dear clients, accomplished actor Terence Bernie Hines, has shown off two beautiful Tailor On Ten suits on red carpets around the world, including the Emmys. If you share his taste for colorful pocket squares, you may find just what you are looking for in our online accessories collection.
